Why pick Slark?

Pounce from the dark, steal their stats and disappear before they can answer.

These are our editorial build paths. Labels describe their purpose, not measured popularity or win rate. Click an item for its use. Each stage is an inventory snapshot: keep earlier items, use consumables, upgrade components, and replace small items as space runs out. Boots, defenses, and late slots can change with the draft.

Slark is a slippery Agility carry who steals stats, dispels himself, pounces onto targets and vanishes with Shadow Dance.
Slark is a melee Agility hero. Our recommended role is position 1 carry.
Slark wins by picking fights nobody can finish. Dark Pact removes debuffs, Pounce leashes a target so it cannot escape, Essence Shift steals agility with every attack, and Shadow Dance hides him and heals him when no enemy can see him. Pick Slark when the enemy has few instant disables and relies on debuffs he can dispel. He is weak against long stuns, true sight and heroes who out-fight him early.
Trade attacks whenever the enemy support steps forward: every hit steals agility and the stacks make the next trade better. Use Dark Pact to clear stuns or slows the moment they land and to add damage in a short fight. Pounce only when a kill is likely; it is also your escape.
Enter fights from fog with Shadow Dance active, pounce onto a support or a carry without disables and attack until Essence Shift has drained them. Dispel the first stun with Dark Pact and leave with Shadow Dance when the enemy turns to you. Slark fights in short bursts, not in long brawls.
Power Treads, Magic Wand and a Wraith Band carry the lane. Echo Sabre or Shadow Blade are common first cores, Eul's Scepter adds a dispel for silences, and Black King Bar handles enemy control. Skull Basher and Abyssal Blade lock targets down, while Aghanim's Scepter and Silver Edge extend the pickoff style.

Dark Pact pulses after a short delay and removes most debuffs on Slark when it starts, so cast it as soon as a stun or slow is coming, not after it has run its course. It also damages Slark slightly, which matters at low health.

Shadow Dance's passive gives Slark bonus regeneration and movement speed whenever no enemy hero or ward can see him. Break vision in trees or fog between fights to recover quickly, and remember that true sight from sentries or Gems removes the bonus.

Pounce latches onto the first hero it hits and keeps them within a short radius for a few seconds. The target can still cast and attack, so pounce onto heroes without strong answers. Pounce over cliffs and trees to escape when Shadow Dance is on cooldown.
| Detail | What it means in your game |
|---|---|
| Dark Pact | After a delay, Slark pulses damage around himself and removes most debuffs from himself. |
| Pounce | Slark leaps forward and leashes the first enemy hero he hits, keeping them close for a few seconds. |
| Saltwater Shiv | Slark's attacks steal health regeneration, movement speed and other properties from the target. |
| Depth Shroud | Requires Aghanim's Shard. Creates a shroud that hides Slark and allies inside it. |
| Shadow Dance | Slark becomes invisible and cannot be revealed while attacking; passively heals and speeds up when unseen. |
Slark is a position 1 carry who farms in the safe lane and starts fighting as soon as he has Shadow Dance and a core item. Unlike many carries he prefers short pickoffs and small fights over long team fights, so a Slark team should play around the map and take targets one at a time.
Power Treads, Magic Wand and Wraith Band cover the lane. Echo Sabre or Shadow Blade are the usual first cores, followed by Eul's Scepter or Black King Bar depending on the enemy control. Skull Basher into Abyssal Blade, Silver Edge, Aghanim's Scepter and Satanic complete the build in long games.
Slark takes practice. His strength depends on timing Dark Pact against debuffs and on knowing when to leave with Shadow Dance, and he loses to teams that stun him for a long time. Beginners should start by using Dark Pact only to dispel, pouncing on supports and always keeping an escape route in mind.
Shadow Dance makes Slark invisible even while attacking and gives bonus movement speed and regeneration. Use it to approach a target unseen, to finish a kill while enemies cannot target you or to escape when the fight turns. Its passive heals you whenever no enemy sees you, so stepping into fog between fights is part of playing the hero.
