Why pick Skywrath Mage?

Seal the target, drop the flare and never let anyone reach you.

Skywrath Mage is a fragile Intelligence caster with long-range nukes, a silence and one of the highest single-target damage ultimates in Dota 2.
Skywrath Mage is a ranged Intelligence hero. Our recommended role is position 4 support, with mid as an alternative.
Skywrath Mage deletes heroes from range. Arcane Bolt scales with intelligence and spams cheap damage, Concussive Shot slows the nearest enemy from very far away, Ancient Seal silences and amplifies magic damage, and Mystic Flare deals enormous damage to a target that stands in it. Pick him against fragile heroes without spell immunity. He dies to almost anything that reaches him, so position and mana management decide his games.
Harass with Arcane Bolt on every cooldown; it costs little and the damage grows with your intelligence. Concussive Shot slows an enemy who steps forward so your carry can follow up. Buy Clarities and Null Talismans so the mana never runs out, and avoid standing where a gap closer can reach you.
Stay at maximum range behind your team. Open with Ancient Seal on the target who must die, then Mystic Flare on top of them while an ally's disable holds them in place. Keep casting Arcane Bolt on anyone in range. Rod of Atos or Eul's Scepter give you your own set-up when no ally provides one.
Null Talismans, Boots and Magic Wand carry the lane. Rod of Atos is the usual first core because it roots a target for Mystic Flare, and Aether Lens adds safety through range. Eul's Scepter, Force Staff or Glimmer Cape protect you, Aghanim's Scepter spreads your spells to nearby enemies and Scythe of Vyse adds a hard disable.

Ancient Seal silences the target and makes it take more magic damage. Always cast it before Mystic Flare and Arcane Bolt so your whole combo hits harder, and so the target cannot escape with a spell. The silence also stops a channeling enemy.

Mystic Flare spreads its damage over the area and over its duration, so a target that walks out early takes little. Cast it on a rooted, stunned or slowed hero, and on a single target rather than a group, because the damage is split between enemies inside.

Arcane Bolt gains damage from Skywrath Mage's intelligence, which makes Null Talismans and later intelligence items worth more than on most supports. Level Arcane Bolt early and keep the mana flowing with Clarities, Arcane Boots or Aether Lens.
| Detail | What it means in your game |
|---|---|
| Arcane Bolt | Fires a slow bolt that deals magic damage increased by Skywrath Mage's intelligence. |
| Concussive Shot | Fires a shot at the nearest enemy hero within a long range, damaging and slowing enemies near the impact. |
| Ancient Seal | Silences an enemy and increases the magic damage it takes for the duration. |
| Mystic Flare | Calls down a storm of magic damage on a small area over a short time, split among enemies inside. |
Skywrath Mage is usually a position 4 support who harasses the lane with Arcane Bolt and later kills heroes with Ancient Seal into Mystic Flare. He can also play mid, where more levels and farm turn him into a burst caster. In both roles he needs allies with disables and a safe position far from the fight.
Start with regen, Null Talismans and wards, then Boots and Magic Wand. Rod of Atos is the common first core, often with Aether Lens. Eul's Scepter, Force Staff or Glimmer Cape add safety, Aghanim's Scepter spreads his spells, and Scythe of Vyse or Octarine Core finish the build in long games.
Skywrath Mage is easy to cast but easy to kill. Beginners enjoy the big numbers, but they must learn to stay far behind the team, to keep mana for the combo and to cast Mystic Flare only on a target that cannot move. Picking him against spell-immune heroes or many gap closers is a common mistake.
Mystic Flare deals very high damage over a short time in a small area, split among enemies inside. Use it on a single hero who is rooted, stunned or slowed, right after Ancient Seal so the damage is amplified. Rod of Atos gives you your own set-up when no ally can hold the target.
