Why pick Kunkka?
Pick Kunkka when your team needs a tanky initiator with area control and a cleave that punishes grouped enemies.

Mark the target, time the Torrent and sail the ship through the whole enemy team.
Kunkka is a durable Strength hero with a cleaving attack, a delayed stun and a team-wide damage-absorbing ultimate.
Pick Kunkka when your team needs a tanky initiator with area control and a cleave that punishes grouped enemies.
Avoid Kunkka against lineups that spread out, stay at range or dispel easily, where his set-ups rarely land.
Do not cast Torrent on a moving target without X. Mark first, then let the water catch them.

Kunkka is a durable Strength hero with a cleaving attack, a delayed stun and a team-wide damage-absorbing ultimate.
Kunkka is a melee Strength hero. Our recommended role is offlane, with mid as an alternative.
Kunkka controls fights with set-ups. X Marks the Spot drags a target back to a point, Torrent erupts there with a stun, and Ghostship crashes through the whole enemy team while protecting your allies. Tidebringer gives him lane control and farming speed with a single cleaving attack. Pick him when your team wants a tanky front liner who can start fights and still deal physical damage.
Use Tidebringer on the enemy hero when they stand next to creeps so the cleave hits both and you still get the last hit. In the offlane, level Tidebringer and Torrent first and look for an X into Torrent when the enemy support steps forward. Bottle or Magic Wand keeps you trading, and a Quelling Blade makes the cleave farm faster.
Start fights with X Marks the Spot on a hero who wants to escape, cast Torrent on the X and return them before the water erupts. Aim Ghostship through as many enemies as possible while it passes over your own team for the damage absorption. Follow up with Tidebringer on the stunned group.
Phase Boots, Bottle or Magic Wand and Bracer cover the lane. Armlet of Mordiggian is the usual first core because Tidebringer scales with attack damage. Black King Bar and Blink Dagger follow for initiation, then Daedalus, Assault Cuirass or Shadow Blade. Aghanim's Scepter adds a second ship for a fight-focused game.

Torrent has a delay before it erupts. Cast X Marks the Spot on a target, place Torrent on the X and return the target right before the eruption. The enemy lands in the stun no matter where they walked. Practice the timing in a lobby; it is the core of the hero.

Tidebringer is an attack modifier on a cooldown, not a passive on every hit. Save it for the moment several enemies stand together, and attack a target at the back of the group so the cleave travels through the others. A high-damage attack with Armlet or Daedalus turns one cleave into a team wipe.

With Aghanim's Shard, Tidal Wave pushes enemies back and damages them in a line. Use it to separate the enemy front line from their supports, to push divers off your carry, or to shove enemies into Torrent and Ghostship. It also interrupts channeling abilities in its path.
| Detail | What it means in your game |
|---|---|
| Torrent | After a short delay, a column of water erupts, stunning, damaging and slowing enemies in the area. |
| Tidebringer | Kunkka's next attack deals bonus damage and cleaves to enemies in a wide area. |
| X Marks the Spot | Marks a hero's position; Kunkka can return the target to that spot before the mark expires. |
| Tidal Wave | Requires Aghanim's Shard. Sends a wave that damages and knocks back enemies in a line. |
| Ghostship | Summons a ship that crashes after a delay, stunning and damaging enemies and giving allies rum that delays part of the damage they take. |
Kunkka fits the offlane best, where his durability, Tidebringer trades and set-up spells make him a strong initiator. He can also play mid, using Bottle and cleave to farm quickly and rotate with X and Torrent. In both roles his job is to land the stun combo and protect the team with Ghostship.
Phase Boots, Magic Wand and Bracer carry the lane, often with Bottle in mid. Armlet of Mordiggian is the common first core, followed by Black King Bar and Blink Dagger. Daedalus and Assault Cuirass scale the cleave, Shadow Blade adds surprise initiation, and Aghanim's Scepter gives a second Ghostship.
Kunkka is a medium-difficulty hero. Tidebringer and Ghostship are easy to use, but the X Marks the Spot into Torrent combo needs practice with the delay. Beginners can start by using Torrent on stunned or slowed targets and Ghostship through groups, then add the X combo once the timing feels natural.
Ghostship travels a long distance and crashes after a delay, so aim it slightly ahead of moving enemies and through your own team. Allies touched by the ship get rum, which delays a share of the damage they take and speeds them up. Combine it with X and Torrent so enemies cannot walk out of the crash.
