Bristleback is a tanky Strength offlaner who sprays quills, shrugs off damage from behind and gets stronger the more spells he casts.
Bristleback is a melee Strength hero. Our recommended role is offlane.
Bristleback wins by refusing to die. Quill Spray stacks damage on everyone around him, Viscous Nasal Goo removes armor and slows a target, Bristleback reduces damage taken from the side and back, and Warpath rewards every cast with damage and speed. Pick him when your team needs a front liner who can stand in fights and when the enemy has few ways to break passives or deal pure damage. He is slow to start but relentless once he has a few items.
Walk up to the enemy carry and spray quills whenever they come to last-hit; the stacks make each spray hurt more. Turn your back when you retreat so Bristleback absorbs the damage. Buy regen and a Ring of Health early so you never have to leave lane, and use Goo to slow a support who wants to trade.
Walk into the enemy team and keep casting: Goo on the carry, Quill Spray on everyone. Each cast builds Warpath stacks, so fights get better the longer they last. Face the heroes who deal the most damage so the rest hit your back, and chase targets whose armor Goo has stripped.
Phase Boots, Magic Wand and Ring of Health cover the lane. Vanguard is the usual first core because it blocks the attacks that would otherwise stop you. Eul's Scepter or Blade Mail follow, then Crimson Guard or Pipe for the team and Heart of Tarrasque or Assault Cuirass to become unkillable. Aghanim's Shard adds Hairball for more stacks.

Bristleback reduces damage from the side and far more from behind, and taking enough damage from behind releases a free Quill Spray. When you retreat, run directly away from the enemy so the heaviest hits land on your back. When you fight, face the target you want to kill and let the others hit your side.

Quill Spray adds a stack to every enemy it hits, and each stack increases the damage of the next spray up to a cap. Spray at the start of a fight and keep spraying even while you walk; the stacks on the enemy carry turn a tank into a damage dealer. Hairball from the Shard adds stacks from range.

Each Goo stack removes more armor and slows the target further. Put several stacks on the enemy carry so your team's physical damage and your quills shred them, and so they cannot walk away. Goo also keeps a fleeing support in range of your sprays.
| Detail | What it means in your game |
|---|---|
| Viscous Nasal Goo | Covers a target in goo that reduces armor and slows movement; stacks with repeated casts. |
| Quill Spray | Sprays quills at nearby enemies; each hit adds a stack that increases the damage of later sprays. |
| Bristleback | Passive. Reduces damage taken from the side and back and releases quills after enough damage from behind. |
| Hairball | Requires Aghanim's Shard. Launches a hairball that applies quill and goo stacks in an area. |
| Warpath | Passive. Each ability cast grants stacking damage and movement speed for a short time. |
Bristleback is an offlaner. He survives hard lanes with his damage reduction, trades with Quill Spray and becomes the front liner of his team once he has Vanguard and boots. Occasionally he is played mid, but the offlane gives him the farm and the position he needs.
Start with regen and stats, then Phase Boots, Magic Wand and Ring of Health into Vanguard. Eul's Scepter adds speed and a dispel, Blade Mail punishes enemies who focus him, and Crimson Guard or Pipe help the team. Heart of Tarrasque, Assault Cuirass and Shiva's Guard finish the build; Aghanim's Shard adds Hairball.
Yes. Bristleback is one of the best heroes for learning the offlane: his spells are simple, his passive forgives mistakes and he teaches you to think about where you face. New players should remember to keep casting in fights, to turn around when retreating and to check whether the enemy has passive-breaking items or pure damage.
Warpath is passive: every ability you cast adds a stack of bonus damage and movement speed for a limited time. In fights, alternate Quill Spray and Goo constantly to keep the stacks high, which makes you faster and makes your attacks and quills hit harder. Mana items such as Arcane Boots or Soul Ring help you keep casting.
