How to counter pick in Dota 2

Counter picking is the cheapest advantage in Dota 2. You do not need better mechanics or more farm, only the right hero against the enemy draft. In ranked All Pick both teams pick in turns, so the information grows pick by pick: the later you choose, the more you know. Pick your flexible heroes first, keep one slot open, and use the last pick on the hero that answers what the enemy committed to.

Enter the enemy heroes here as they appear. The counter list updates with every hero you add, so you can see which answers stay good against the whole draft and which only beat one hero. A counter that only works against one enemy is a fine last pick; a counter that works against three is a safe first pick.

What makes a hero a counter

Most counters are about one mechanic. Dispels beat heroes who rely on a single buff or debuff: a Basic Dispel removes a Rupture or a Frostbite, a Strong Dispel removes a hex. Silences and breaks beat heroes who need to cast or who live from a passive. Spell immunity beats magic-heavy drafts, pure or percentage damage beats armor and health stackers, and mobility beats heroes who need the enemy to stand still. Range beats melee in lane; sustain beats poke.

MechanicBeatsTypical answers
DispelHeroes who need one buff or debuff to workAbaddon, Oracle, Legion Commander, Manta Style
SilenceCasters and channelled ultimatesSilencer, Skywrath Mage, Orchid, Bloodthorn
BreakHeroes built on a passiveViper, Silver Edge, Shiva's Guard
Spell immunityMagic burst and lockdownBlack King Bar, Lifestealer, Juggernaut
Percentage damageHealth and armor stackersNecrophos, Outworld Destroyer, Silver Edge
MobilityHeroes who need you to stand stillEmber Spirit, Puck, Force Staff

The numbers on this page show which of these interactions actually win games in your bracket. When Abaddon tops the list against Axe, the data confirms what the spells suggest: Aphotic Shield dispels Berserker's Call and Borrowed Time turns Culling Blade into a wasted ultimate.

Counter picks by position

  • Supports counter first. They pick early, their items change little, and a good lane counter decides the first ten minutes.
  • Mid answers mid. The mid matchup is a duel; the Worst matchups tab shows what the enemy mid hates.
  • Cores counter last. Hold the last pick for your carry and choose from your own pool only.
  • Bans are counters too. If one enemy hero beats your whole pool, ban it instead of answering it.

A counter only helps if someone on your team can play it in the right role. The By position tab splits the ranking into Carry, Mid, Offlane, Soft support and Hard support, so a support player sees support answers and not a list of carries. Supports usually have the most freedom to counter pick because they pick early and change little about their item build; cores should counter pick only when the hero is already in their pool.

How this counter picker works

The tool reads public ranked All Pick matches from OpenDota and counts, for every hero pair, how often one side beat the other. The tables are kept per patch and per bracket group, so a counter in Immortal games is never mixed with Herald games, and a new patch starts a fresh table. For each candidate hero the tool compares its win rate against your enemies with its own average win rate; the difference is the advantage you see as a percentage. Small samples are pulled towards zero before ranking, and heroes with fewer than twenty games against your draft are hidden. The collector runs every day, and the sample line above the results tells you how many matches the current table holds.

Frequently asked questions

What is a counter pick in Dota 2?

A counter pick is a hero chosen because its abilities beat a hero the enemy already picked: a dispel against a hero who relies on one buff, a silence against a channelled ultimate, or a hero who does not care about the enemy's main damage type. In this tool a counter is a hero that wins clearly more often against the enemy draft than it wins on average.

How do you counter pick in ranked Dota 2?

Pick your flexible heroes first and hold your last pick until the enemy shows their core. Enter the enemy heroes here as they appear, check the Counter picks tab for your position, and prefer heroes you can actually play: a counter you play badly loses to a comfort hero you play well.

Which bracket should I choose?

Pick the bracket of your own medal. Matchups shift with skill: a hero that punishes bad positioning counters more in Herald than in Immortal. Right after a new patch the samples are small, so All brackets is the safer choice for the first days.

Where do the counter numbers come from?

From public ranked All Pick matches published by OpenDota. Every match is counted once per hero pair and sorted into a table per patch and bracket. The collector runs daily; the sample line above the results shows the number of matches behind the current table.

Why does a hero with a higher percentage sit below another one?

Small samples are pulled towards zero before ranking. A +12% from forty games is less reliable than +9% from two thousand games, so the second hero ranks higher. Hover a number to see the games behind it.

Does the counter picker use my own matches?

No. It uses public ranked matches only. Dota Rankup will later preselect your bracket and mark the heroes you play.
